Matcha Green Tea Powder & Bamboo Chasen Whisk
Many green tea enthusiasts prefer to use a Chashaku tea scoop, Chawan bowl and bamboo Chasen whisk when preparing matcha tea powder, but there are common household utensils that can serve as suitable alternatives. The Chawan bowl can be replaced by an ordinary bowl with high sides and a teaspoon can be used instead of the Chashaku tea scoop. The only traditional tool we would recommend using each and every time is the bamboo Chasen whisk, as the taste and texture of matcha tea prepared with an electric whisk are not quite the same. They’re not necessarily better or worse, just…different.
Chasen Matcha Whisk
This is why we’ve included a 100-prong bamboo Chasen in the Kineta Traditional Matcha Starter Set. One of the most distinctive and visually interesting tea tools (chadōgu) used during the Japanese Tea Ceremony (chanoyu), Chasen whisks are hand-carved from a single piece of bamboo. Sustainably sourced and 100% organic, these bamboo whisks come with a tightly knotted core that will open up and bloom after several uses; further enhancing the whisk’s aesthetic appeal.
Perfectly designed to produce the ideal matcha green tea, whisking your drink with a bamboo Chasen will create a smooth, creamy texture that nothing else can quite manage to replicate. To avoid causing any lasting damage, don’t leave the Chasen in water for very long and allow it to dry out thoroughly.
Kineta Ceremonial-Grade Matcha Green Tea
Along with the Chasen whisk, this Starter Pack also comes with a 30g tin of Soil Association-certified Kineta Ceremonial-Grade Matcha Green Tea Powder. Grown on a family-run Tencha tea leaf farm in the heart of Japan, the leaves used to create Kineta matcha green tea are sustainably sourced and stone-ground to ensure that each leaf loses none of its natural goodness. Matcha tea contains 17 times the antioxidants content of blueberries and is a natural source of numerous essential vitamins and minerals, making it the perfect drink for those in need of a boost and those who could do with taking a break.
To prepare a cup of matcha tea, simply add 1 or 2 grams of powder to your bowl and pour 70°C water on top. Then, with your bamboo Chasen, whisk the tea until the water has turned green, and a smooth, frothy veneer has formed on top.
