This is one of Japan’s most popular green teas. Genmaicha rice tea is a blend of Yanagi Bancha green tea leaves and toasted brown rice. Sourced from our great friends at the Obubu Tea Gardens. This type of green tea is often nicknamed ‘popcorn tea’ and has a nutty aroma and a buttery sweet taste.

In ancient Japan, green tea was considered a luxury for the rich because it was a relatively expensive commodity. To make it last as long as possible, the poorer members of society would add toasted brown rice as a filler. Clever, because in doing so, they created this blended green tea. The toasted brown rice gives it a unique and very drinkable flavour profile. Despite its humble beginnings, Genmaicha rice tea has become an incredibly popular variety of Japanese loose leaf green tea and is now drunk in all segments of society. This is no doubt due to its deliciously full nutty taste and earthy undertones, which cannot but remind drinkers of the rich flavour of popcorn.

This particular tea is an award-winning blend. It is enjoyed by the vast majority of our customers here at I Love Green Tea. For those of you who are a little more experimental? Then we can highly recommend this tea in the summer as a cold drink. Simply add 5-6g to 1 litre of cold water and place in the fridge for an hour before drinking!
